CMPE 323 - Digital Design and Computer Architecture


Units: 4
An engineering approach to the logic design of digital computers. Boolean algebra, combinational and sequential circuits, computer arithmetic, memories, integrated circuits, control processors, input/output, hardware description language and FPGA programming, interface with digital hardware components. Lecture Units: 3; Lab Units: 1.

Prerequisites: CS 211 and CMPE 221 with a grade of C- or better.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Calculate in binary and hexadecimal number systems;
  2. Manipulate Boolean algebra for efficient hardware;
  3. Apply logic gate concepts to design combinational and sequential hardware;
  4. Implement control and datapath components of a central processing unit (CPU) architecture;
  5. Analyze and test CPU architecture implementation using simple programs;
  6. Utilize digital simulation software for hardware implementation systems;
  7. Design digital hardware using a hardware description languages (HDL);
  8. Create physical implementations of digital hardware using discrete components an programmable logic.
