BIOL 447 - Zoonoses & Emerging Infectious Diseases Units: 3 Zoonoses (diseases transmitted from animals to humans), Emerging, and Re-emerging infectious diseases increasingly threaten health security worldwide. This course focuses on their etiologies, epidemiology, prevention, diagnostic and treatment strategies; and how human behaviors and societal trends contribute to their rise.
Co-requisites: BIOL 330. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Recognize and understand the zoonotic potential of selected diseases;
- Compare and contrast emerging and re-emerging diseases;
- Understand the challenges and consequences of these diseases to human and animal health;
- Describe the etiology, epidemiology, diagnostics and available treatments of selected diseases;
- Compare and contrast the causes and impacts of these diseases in developed vs developing countries;
- Recognize and explain successful public health measures of prevention and control;
- Clearly communicate factual, conceptual, and theoretical concepts and applications of topics covered in this course.
