MUS 445 - Piano Pedagogy Units: 2 A one-semester introduction to professional piano teaching, the course will examine methods, materials, resources, and techniques for teaching at the elementary level. Students will observe secondary piano group instruction and survey a wealth of elementary- to early-intermediate piano repertoire.
Prerequisites: MUS 112, MUS 116. Repeatability: May be repeated for credit for a maximum of 6 units. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Develop pedagogical skills for teaching the elementary level student
- Evaluate methods and materials available to the piano teacher
- Observe and analyze university-level secondary group piano classes
- Develop the ability to plan private lessons for peer and instructor feedback
- Explore the business aspects of operating an independent piano studio
- Articulate a studio policy and marketing strategy
- Evaluate online and print resources relating to professional piano teaching including journals, magazines, books and conferences proceedings
