POSC 319 - Social Media and Political Communication


Units: 3
Issues involving the rise of ‘big tech’, social media, and politics.  Topics may include the technology sector in Bay Area politics, the use and misuse of social media in movements and campaigns, foreign election interference, and the spread of misinformation.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: POSC 101.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. To gain and demonstrate knowledge of empirical research involving social media in politics and political communication. This includes the use and misuse of social media in political campaigns and communication, the effects of information and misinformation on social media, the technology sector in the Bay Area, and the use of social media in political organizing globally. (This overlaps with Political Science PLO 2 and 3).
  2. To complete a class project that clearly communicates to an audience some core concept learned in the class involving the use of social media in politics. This could involve writing an essay or completing a research project, taking part in a class production of a play, creating a youtube video or website, creating an original song or work of art, or other similar endeavor. (This overlaps with Political Science PLOs 1, 3, or 5).
