PHIL 110 - Freshman Topics in Philosophy and the Arts Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-C1 As part of the Freshman Learning Communities, this course will introduce students to basic concepts in philosophy as applied to the arts through the lens of a particular theme, and in relationship with other disciplines.
Credit Restrictions: Not open to students with credit for PHIL 120 or PHIL 130. Equivalent Quarter Course: Any one from: PHIL 1005, PHIL 1102, PHIL 1103, PHIL 1104, PHIL 1201, PHIL 1302, PHIL 1303, PHIL 1401. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-C1 - Lower Division Arts Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Introduction to academic, argumentative writing.
- Introduction to core understandings of art in philosophical or religious traditions, relevant concepts, and historical context.
- Cultivate an openness to the ideas of others and a self-awareness of the strengths and limitations of one’s own aesthetic opinions.
- Learn the basics of analyzing the arguments and interpretations of others and creating original arguments and interpretations of one’s own.
C1. Arts Learning Outcomes - Demonstrate an appreciation of the arts using their intellect, imagination, sensibility, and sensitivity;
- respond to aesthetic experiences in the arts and develop an understanding of the integrity of both emotional and intellectual responses; and
- in their intellectual and subjective considerations, demonstrate an understanding of the relationship among the self, the creative arts, and culture.
