HON 309 - Honors Service and Leadership


Units: 3
Introduction to the practice and theory of civic leadership, with emphasis upon community engagement. Service learning hours required. Please note: effective spring 2019 this course prefix will change from GS to HON. Discussion Units: 1; Activity Units: 2.

Prerequisites: Department consent.
Equivalent Quarter Course: GS 3099.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1.     Describe and explain service learning as purposeful work connected to their disciplinary interests.
  2.     Describe civic or community engagement practices and philosophies.
  3.     Identify and analyze a significant community issue or problem in the Bay Area.
  4.     Survey and outline recent academic perspectives on the student’s selected community issue or problem, drawing from disciplinary as well as community-based literature.
  5.     Identify and collaborate with a service partner in order to construct a meaningful response to the community issue or problem.
  6.     Evaluate the community issue or problem in the context of actual fieldwork.
