HIST 277 - Science and Culture in the History of Medicine in the United States Units: 3 History of medicine in the US from the colonial period to the present, including: emergence of the medical profession, the rise of the hospital, the relationship between medicine and science, and the role of politics, cultural beliefs, and religious values.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE area A2. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - develop the ability to think critically and to communicate effectively about the interactions between medicine, science and social change. “Communication” in this course includes working on writing skills by writing a research paper and book review as well as participating in discussion board forums.
- develop students’ skills in presenting arguments, in written form in accordance with appropriate scholarly conventions.
- develop a critical understanding of primary source material and demonstrate an appreciation of historical interpretations and methodologies.
- critically evaluate key themes and issues in the history of medicine in the light of historical/historiographical frameworks.
