HIST 461 - India Through Film Units: 3 An exploration of Indian / South Asian history, and its construction, through documentary and dramatic films. Topics will include: nationalism, class, caste, gender, sexuality, and community identity formation in both India and the South Asian diaspora.
Equivalent Quarter Course: HIST 3307. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Know basic analytic concepts for interpreting films relating to Indian / South Asian history;
- Demonstrate significant knowledge of major events in South Asian history as presented in film, vis a vis historical evidence;
- Write and speak clearly and persuasively about social justice, sustainability, and diversity in South Asian history as seen through the lens of film;
- Provide original critical analysis of one documentary and one fictional film;
- Discuss the role of film in social change in and global awareness of the region.
