ENSC 397 - Advanced Field Experience


Units: 2
Applied field based inquiry activities to develop advanced field skills, common to field research and professional activity in geology and the environmental sciences. Students spend extended periods in a natural, outdoor laboratory setting.

Prerequisites: GEOL/ENSC 297 and junior or senior standing.
Repeatability: May be repeated for credit for a maximum of 6 units when the content varies.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Cross-listed: GEOL 397.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Consistently and accurately self-locate and navigate using topographic maps, a pocket transit compass, and advanced GPS methods
  2. Identify, interpret and characterize intermediate to complex geo-environmental systems, evaluate their origins and/or remediation Identify, measure and collect data from environmental systems using sophisticated geologic and environmental tools and methods
  3. Compile and construct syntheses based on field observations, data, subsequent analysis, and peer/group interaction.
  4. Exhibit competence in a field environment, an understanding of industry safety standards and an introduction to safe back-country field work.
