PHIL 354 - Global Human Rights and Social Justice


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C; Social Justice
Explores human rights theory and its global application from a philosophical perspective. Considers whether the following concepts can be applied globally: The nature of rights, individualism, liberalism, the social contract, multiculturalism, materialism, and the nature of power.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Equivalent Quarter Course: PHIL 3511.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. write clear, academically rigorous argumentative essays;
  2. read complex texts, create original arguments, analyze the arguments of others, and express criticisms orally and in writing;
  3. demonstrate knowledge of philosophical theories of human/political rights and their traditions, methods and historical concepts;
  4. cultivate an appreciation for a diversity of ideas and values across time and for human difference in areas such as: religion, culture, ethnicity, race, class, sexuality and gender.

  1. demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply the principles, methodologies, value systems, and thought processes employed in the arts and humanities;
