POSC 323 - Political Systems of Asia


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D
An analysis of politics in selected Asian countries. The degree of emphasis on particular countries and areas such as China, India, Japan and Southeast Asia varies.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Equivalent Quarter Course: POSC 3204.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Develop and articulate an understanding of theories and other analytical approaches in comparative politics developed in the American and Asian settings
  2. Understand the empirical aspect of comparative politics in Northeast and Southeast Asia, specifically the institutions and process of government in the region
  3. Understand the relationship between ethnic, racial, religious and socio-economic diversity and political cultures in Northeast and Southeast Asia
  4. Be able to apply theories and analytical approaches, both individually and collaboratively, to studying the institutions, governments, political culture and public policies in Northeast and Southeast Asia
  5. Be able to apply theories and analytical approaches, both individually and collaboratively, to compare different governments in Northeast and Southeast Asia
  6. Understand public policy in Northeast and Southeast Asia, including its relationships to the concept of sustainability
  7. Demonstrate oral and written competency of the theories and analytical approaches used in the course
  8. Work as a team in analyzing their assigned countries
