POSC 351 - International Relations


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D
The conduct of relations among states. The international system, national power, sovereignty, nationalism, ideology; use of diplomacy, propaganda, economic influence, military force; problems of neocolonialism, multinational corporations, racial tensions, nuclear deterrence, war, the role of the United Nations.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Equivalent Quarter Course: POSC 3520.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Develop and articulate an understanding of theories and other analytical approaches in international relations
  2. Demonstrate expert knowledge of specific countries, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, as well as several international issues - political, security, economic, development, and social and cultural - and how they impact the international community
  3. Understand the institutions, political processes and public policies in the international community through sustained research
  4. Demonstrate through oral and written competence, an understanding of the theories, concepts, empirical content related to international relations
  5. Demonstrate the ability to apply theories and other analytical approaches to practical problems in the international arena
  6. Think critically and creatively, applying theoretical and analytical approaches, to recommend solutions for global problems
  7. Demonstrate oral and written capability in policy papers, research, discussions and class debates.
  8. Develop an appreciation for, and apply knowledge of, diversity and multicultural competencies to promote equity and social justice at the global level
  9. Develop effective negotiating and bargaining skills
  10. Develop effective collaboration and teamwork skills by solving various problems
  11. Learn of different career opportunities in international relations
