POSC 354 - American Foreign Policy Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D National security, economic and development assistance policies since World War II. Current policy choices and the constitutional conflict between Congress and the President. Role of the State Department, the military, the CIA, and non-governmental organizations (labor, business, and veterans).
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements. Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better. Equivalent Quarter Course: POSC 3505. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Develop and articulate an understanding of theories and other analytical approaches in international relations and foreign policy
- Demonstrate through oral and written competence, an understanding of the theories, concepts, empirical content related to United States foreign policy
- Understand and articulate the key foreign policy issues that are important to the United States as a global player
- Think critically and creatively, applying theoretical and analytical approaches, to recommend solutions for US foreign policy
- Learn different career opportunities in American diplomacy
- Develop writing skills in policy papers, research reports and press releases
- Develop oral communication skills through speeches, interventions, debates and negotiations
- Develop the critical abilities to analyze several international issues - political, security, economic, development, and social and cultural - and how they impact US foreign policy
- Understand how diversity in American society is affecting the creation and conduct of US foreign policy
- Understand the role that sustainability plays in US foreign policy and its actions abroad
- Work as a team in analyzing issues and recommending US foreign policy on multiple issue areas
