MUS 304 - World Music & Culture


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C
Investigating various world music traditions, including those in Africa, South America, and Asia, with an emphasis on connections with culture and history. Previous musical experience welcome but not necessary.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Equivalent Quarter Course: MUS 3014.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Become familiar with music from several major traditions of the world;
  2. Develop a vocabulary of general and specialized terms relating to music;
  3. Gain an understanding of the ways that people structure and think about music;
  4. Better understand the relationship between music and culture and of the role music plays in human experience;
  5. Investigate a music-culture of your choice and communicate your discoveries through writing and oral presentation.
