MATH 118 - Mathematics for the Arts and Humanities Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-B4 Explores mathematics as a human endeavor created in political, cultural, philosophical, and artistic contexts. Examines the many commonalities mathematics has with literature, philosophy, art, and music.
Co-requisites: MATH 18 required for students in Category III or IV. Equivalent Quarter Course: MATH 1110. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: ABC/NC grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Verbally and visually represent basic mathematical concepts.
- Use mathematical reasoning to solve problems, test conjectures, check answers to determine reasonableness, and communicate the reasoning and the results.
- Recognize and use connections between mathematics and other disciplines
B4. Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning Learning Outcomes - Demonstrate a proficient and fluent ability to reason quantitatively;
- demonstrate a general understanding of how practitioners and scholars collect and analyze data, build mathematical models, and/or solve quantitative problems; and
- apply quantitative reasoning skills in a variety of real-world contexts, defined by personal, civic, and/or professional responsibilities.
