HIST 352 - Modern Europe: Unity and Diversity Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C Survey of European history from the French Revolution to today. Fall of monarchy, rise of competing political ideologies/regimes, industrialization, secularization, science. Special attention to internal and external colonization, race and multi-ethnic societies, national cultures, personal identities, social justice.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements. Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better. Equivalent Quarter Course: HIST 3170. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-UD-C - Upper Division Arts or Humanities Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Know basic analytic concepts for interpreting historical evidence relating to the history of diversity in Modern Europe.
- Achieve digital literacy in accessing and presenting information about major figures, ideas and events who played an important role in shaping European visions of and programs to promote or suppress diversity in Modern European history.
- Demonstrate significant knowledge of major events and trends in the history of Europe.
- Write and speak clearly and persuasively about events and trends in Modern European history, and work collaboratively with others in solving problems relating to competing visions of unity and diversity of culture, ethnicity, race, and religion.
- Provide original interpretation of assigned sources, and accurately reference all sources in coursework.
- Comprehend how differences and similarities among diverse peoples and cultures over time shaped the history of Modern Europe.
- ILO on Social Justice: understand how Europeans and the peoples they colonized envisioned, enacted, suppressed, and promoted social justice and racial, ethnic and cultural diversity.
- GE D4: Use case studies to analyze European crises of diversity and role play to understand behavioral dynamics in broader human context.
