ENGL 106 - Academic Vocabulary Development


Units: 3
Vocabulary study, including multiple meanings in context, word-formation, related grammatical features, historical changes, and idiomatic and other usage considerations. Emphasis on academic English, but colloquial vocabulary also studied. Course is part of international student cluster for C3 general education credit. (See Course Errata  for description correction) 

Equivalent Quarter Course: ENGL 2000.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Acquire academic words in a variety of academic texts and on the Academic Word List;
  2. Determine the part of speech of a word, choose from multiple meanings in the dictionary according to context and recognize related word forms, roots, and affixes;
  3. Utilize learned vocabulary in a variety of academic speaking, listening, writing, and reading activities;
  4. Meet C3 general education outcomes.
