ENGL 240 - Introduction to American Film


Units: 4
Study of American cinema that introduces students to the language of film analysis and to key figures, scripts, and films from the silent era, the Hollywood studio system, independent filmmakers, and contemporary film productions.

Equivalent Quarter Course: ENGL 2740 or ENGL 2745.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Articulate informed ideas about the development of American cinema;
  2. Watch films closely and analytically, listen carefully to and respect the ideas and interpretations of others;
  3. Draw connections between the experiences depicted in the films and the experiences of themselves and/or others;
  4. Write clear thesis-driven essays about the films, demonstrating their ability to use the language of film analysis;
  5. Revise and improve their writing in both form and content.
