KIN 470 - Sport in the Local Community


Units: 3
Examine how local city spaces where sport occurs are constituted and promoted according to distinguishers of race, ethnicity, social class, culture and immigration.

Prerequisites: KIN 302 or KIN 305.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Students will examine key influences such as neo-liberalism and gentrification that impact upon local community sport spaces.
  2. Students will use the concepts of “social space” in order to analyze social inclusion/exclusion issues that influence usage patterns.
  3. Students will reveal the key socio-cultural and historical factors that structure various local East Bay communities and subsequently influence sport participation.
  4. Students will describe the key stakeholders that manage, fund, or use local community spaces where sport occurs.
