MUS 316 - Jazz Theory and Composition Units: 3 Study of jazz harmonic theory and composition for small jazz ensembles. Topics include the analysis of standard jazz repertoire and compositions by jazz composers, jazz applications of tonal harmony, reharmonization techniques and chord substitution, and idiomatic song forms.
Prerequisites: MUS 112. Equivalent Quarter Course: MUS 3040. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- introduce the basic tenants of jazz harmonic theory.
- expose the use of these theoretical practices through the study of classic compositions and solo transcriptions.
- introduction to basic piano voicings .
- will learn the basic principles of harmonic superimposition, substitution, slash chords, and diminished harmony
