COMM 104 - Interpersonal Communication Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-A1 Study of principles of oral communication within interpersonal encounters. Emphasizes how to analyze communicative behavior and to practice applied listening and speaking strategies for improving oral communication skills and relationships in the interpersonal contexts of work, family, friendship, and romance. Must earn C- or better for GE credit.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Explain the basic elements and models of the communication process in interpersonal settings;
- Recognize the role of interpersonal communication in the self-concept development and influence process, and the multidimensional identity of the self;
- Analyze physiological, psychological, and contextual factors that affect perception and misunderstanding;
- Explain the principles of effective oral communication skills in various interpersonal encounters, including appropriate form, content, context, and style;
- Apply learned interpersonal communication skills and theories in role plays and in various real-life communication contexts;
- Speak effectively in and critically evaluate oral presentations about the real-life application of interpersonal communication skills;
- Demonstrate an understanding of ethical, other-oriented interpersonal communication founded in communication theory;
- Recognize and adapt to diverse viewpoints and backgrounds, while attending to messages with an open mind;
- Explain the role of interpersonal communication in the development, maintenance, and de-escalation of work, family, friendship, and romantic relationships;
- Analyze and interpret conflict in interpersonal relationships and demonstrate appropriate conflict management methods, including advocating for a cause or idea using a collaborative style.
