MUS 416 - Jazz Arranging for Large Ensemble Units: 3 Focus on arranging and orchestration techniques for large jazz ensemble. Study of ensemble scores from the jazz masters and the use of doublings, mutes, voicings, upper-structure triads, and linear harmonization to arrange and compose for big band.
Prerequisites: MUS 212 and MUS 316. Equivalent Quarter Course: MUS 4077. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- recognize and refine the concepts of instrumental arranging for Big Band and Jazz Orchestra.
- understand and demonstrate basic jazz harmonic principles through arrangements and compositions.
- analyze jazz orchestra scores. arrange versions of jazz standards as part of the development of the arranging skill.
- demonstrate basic use of music notation software.
