FIN 650 - Financial Management of Banking Institutions


Units: 3
Commercial bank management in today’s financial services industry. Modern approach to understanding and managing the risks faced by banks. Methods of optimizing shareholder value, risk-return tradeoffs, regulatory and strategic issues.

Prerequisites: FIN 605.
Equivalent Quarter Course: FIN 6325.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Discuss the regulatory structure within which banks operate. Identify and describe the role of banks within financial markets. Discuss recent trends in the industry and causes of the recent financial crisis.
  2. Define the CAMELS rating system used by the Federal Reserve to monitor banks.
  3. Define and discuss the Asset/Liability management practices used by modern banks.
  4. Define and discuss the liquidity management practices used by modern banks.
  5. Estimate the risk weighted assets and Tier One capital ratio of an example bank.
