GEOL 441 - Earthquake Geology

Units: 3
Aspects of earthquake geology, plate tectonic and geographic location of seismicity; the source region and rock mechanics and deformation; seismic waves; event dating techniques and tectonic geomorphology; fault types and behavior.

Prerequisites: GEOL 381.
Equivalent Quarter Course: GEOL 4414.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Firmly understand the causes, nature and location of earthquakes and their associated phenomena by interpreting and analyzing both classic and current articles, reports, and maps and texts.
  2. Use their geologic knowledge to critically analyze textbook and journal reading assignments and identify the fundamental theses and supporting evidence of each.
  3. Communicate the complicated concepts, geometries and analysis schemes associated with earthquake geology by means of focused critical précis of textbook chapters and topical journal articles and oral presentations to the class.
  4. Understand the role of earthquakes in the context of plate-tectonic theory and also in society, and the important connections between each.
