ENGL 462 - Children’s Literature before 1900 Units: 4 Children’s literature before 1900, with attention to social and cultural attitudes about childhood that influenced the history and development of the genre.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: ENGL 204. Equivalent Quarter Course: ENGL 4740 or ENGL 4743. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid. Grading: A-F grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - demonstrate familiarity with genres, themes, history, and structures of important works in children’s literature before 1900;
- identify and describe the characteristics of different genres, literary forms, and themes within children’s literature;
- locate and summarize secondary texts related to important works of children’s literature before 1900;
- articulate in cogent writing meaningful connections between specific literary texts written for children, their themes, their historical contexts, and contemporary readers.
- engage in collaborative assignments, such as discussion, oral presentation, and peer editing.
