ENGL 413 - Milton Units: 4 A selection of major works drawn from Milton’s poetry and selected prose.
Equivalent Quarter Course: ENGL 4260. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Define historical periods and literary traditions and understand Milton’s unique contributions to British literature.
- Define the principal themes and problems that emerge from the study of Milton’s masterworks and discuss–in both oral and written formats–the manifestations of themes and problems within selected works.
- Demonstrate (a) an ability to analyze selected passages of a literary text and (b) an ability to use such analyses both to illuminate and complicate a reading of the text in which these passages occur.
- Demonstrate an ability to identify, find, and use library resources (books, journals, companions, etc.) in Milton studies, resources that may further the student’s work both in and beyond ENGL 413.
- Possess an understanding of critical theory and its relationship to literary critiques.
