FIN 420 - Investment Analysis


Units: 3
Introduction to the theory and practice of investment analysis. Topics include asset classes and financial instruments, markets and trading, investment companies, modern portfolio theory, fundamental and technical analysis of securities, and portfolio management.

Prerequisites: FIN 300.
Equivalent Quarter Course: FIN 4310.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Define the major asset classes, various securities within those classes and features of those securities.
  2. Explain how financial securities are traded.
  3. Calculate and compare various measures of risk and return.
  4. Describe the key theories and concepts related to investment portfolios.
  5. Calculate bond values and yields and explain various bond investment strategies.
  6. Calculate equity values using alternative valuation models.
  7. Use information technology tools to find and trade financial securities and build investment portfolios.
