HIST 402 - Introduction to Public History Units: 4 An introduction to Public History as a field and a methodology, exploring what happens to history when it leaves the classroom for public consumption in the form of museum exhibits, documentaries, etc.
Prerequisites: HIST 201. Equivalent Quarter Course: HIST 4032. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Students will understand the distinction between the fields of traditional academic history and public history, and also how these fields are converging in the 21st century;
- Students will learn to critically analyze how history is presented to a public audience;
- Students will engage in the debates about history in the public arena;
- Students will conduct primary research and develop a historical narrative about a guided topic choice;
- Students will produce a research paper, positioned in the literature, and consider how to present their findings to a public audience;
- Students will work in assigned teams to create and build an exhibit for a public organization;
- Students will orally present to an audience their contributions to the exhibit.
