MGMT 693 - Strategic Management Capstone (Project)


Units: 3
An integrative capstone experience in which students take a top management perspective to conduct strategic situational analysis and develop a business plan for a strategic initiative that drives competitive advantage. Real world organizational strategies will be emphasized. Formerly BUS 693.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: A minimum of 27 units of core and/or concentration courses.
Prerequisites: Department consent and satisfaction of the WST.
Equivalent Quarter Course: MGMT 6800 or ENTR 6800.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Develop a strategic business plan for a new or existing organization.
  2. Assess starting or current business model and vision.
  3. Evaluate performance including financials, market share, innovation, and strategic direction.
  4. Analyze internal resources and capabilities.
  5. Analyze external environment including competitors, industries and markets.
  6. Develop direction of growth and frameworks to build strategy.
  7. Develop implementation steps for strategic plans for functional areas such as (but not limited to): marketing, sales, R&D, human resources, accounting, production, IT, customer services, and finance.
  8. Evaluate the challenges organizations face when formulating and implementing strategic business plans, such as limited resources, potential competition, and resistance to change, etc., and develop the leadership in managing the strategic planning process.
  9. Demonstrate the ability to develop the vision and direction of an organization that drive competitive advantage.
