HSC 460 - Emergency Preparedness and Response


Units: 3
Introduction to public health emergency preparedness and response. It provides students with a comprehensive, multidimensional understanding of the needs of various populations in emergencies, considering the political, economic, and cultural contexts.

Prerequisites: HSC 110.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall ONLY


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Critically reflect on the role of public health before, during, and after public health emergencies.
  2. Understand the historical, legal, social, political, and ethical contexts of both the etiology of and response to complex humanitarian emergencies and their aftermath.
  3. Identify and analyze examples of good practices in public health in complex emergencies and natural disasters.
  4. Evaluate emergency response failures worldwide.
  5. Be prepared to function effectively and take action on both personal and community preparedness.
