GEOL 297 - Introductory Field Experience


Units: 1
Applied field-based inquiry activities to introduce lower-division students to fundamental field skills that are common to field research in geology and the environmental sciences. Students spend extended periods in a natural, outdoor laboratory setting.

Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Confidently self-locate and navigate using topographic maps, a pocket transit compass, and GPS methods.
  2. Identify landforms on a topographic map and correlate with actual examples.
  3. Identify, measure and collect data from environmental systems using standard geologic and environmental tools and methods to construct basic surface distribution maps.
  4. Develop familiarity, comfort and confidence in the field environment, and safe field work habits.
