POSC 352 - International Security in the 21st Century Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D Comprehensive approach to studying traditional and non-traditional security concerns in the world. Issues include great power politics, nuclear proliferation, terrorism, failed states, environmental security, and transnational crime. Simulation of crisis situation.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements. Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better. Equivalent Quarter Course: POSC 3510. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - develop and articulate an understanding of the theory of the international political system focusing on international security, as well as present students with practical experience in security policy.
- demonstrate oral and written competency of theories, key concepts, and empirical content, as well as understand research agendas and the application of the theories in international security.
- demonstrate and understanding of international institutions, alliances, coalitions and other security arrangements, as well the role that states, NGOs, international organizations and non-state actors play in international security.
- provide a useful background for students on possible careers in the field of international security
- demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge through collaborative learning and teamwork. This will be demonstrated through debates, group discussions, and a role-playing simulation of an international crisis situation.
