KIN 422 - Exercise Nutrition


Units: 3
Foundational nutrition concepts and current literature. Describe general recommendations for health and wellness, principles of sports nutrition, and practical applications of diet assessment and nutrition planning. Examine products designed to increase performance.

Prerequisites: KIN 306 with grade C or better.
Equivalent Quarter Course: KIN 4005.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Differentiate between study designs and recognize the strengths and limitations of each.
  2. Identify and utilize reputable evidence-based sports nutrition resources for assignments and discussion.
  3. State basic nutrition principles and recognize the of role essential nutrients in physiological function and sport performance.
  4. Describe the role of macronutrients and micronutrients in the process of ATP production through the creatine phosphate, anaerobic glycolysis, and oxidative phosphorylation energy systems.
  5. Determine individualized nutrient needs for athletes participating in different sport-types.
  6. Identify and discuss athlete’s time-specific carbohydrate, protein, fluid, and electrolyte needs.
  7. Define the components of total daily energy expenditure, identify methods of assessing energy expenditure and body composition, and estimate an individual’s daily energy needs.
  8. Recognize the effect of fluid balance and hydration status on exercise performance and health.
  9. Describe and execute the basic elements of developing a performance nutrition plan.
  10. Discuss various disordered eating, eating disordered, and body image issues in the sports climate.
  11. Critique popular supplements for performance enhancement
