KIN 421 - Clinical Exercise Physiology


Units: 3
Perform and interpret selected clinical and physical assessments in patients with chronic diseases where exercise training has been shown to be of therapeutic benefit, including cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, and metabolic and musculoskeletal disorders.

Prerequisites: KIN 306 with grade C or better.
Equivalent Quarter Course: KIN 4330.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Discuss the importance of physical activity to the health and well-being of both healthy and selected, diseased populations,
  2. Perform pre-exercise health screening and identify risks related to exercise participation, Interpret pre-exercise assessments and screening to guide exercise testing, prescription and programming and, where appropriate, further exercise testing.
  3. Use exercise pre-participation screening, exercise test and physical assessment results to develop a physical fitness prescription that is safe and effective and based on scientifically-validated training methods,
  4. Describe and discuss basic pathophysiology of selected chronic conditions/diseases.
  5. Analyze how side-effects of common medications and surgical treatments for selected conditions/diseases may affect exercise tolerance, safety, and adherence.
