BIOL 472 - Neurobiology Laboratory

Units: 4
Basic principles of neurobiology demonstrated using laboratory experiments that include intracellular and extracellular nerve recording, membrane potentials, action potentials, sensory and motor neural processing, nerve tracing, and histology. Lecture Units: 2; Lab Units: 2

Prerequisites: BIOL 471.
Equivalent Quarter Course: BIOL 4512.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate the molecular mechanisms by which neurons generate, transmit, and respond to sensory and electrochemical signals;
  2. Illustrate how information is integrated and encoded in neuronal signals;
  3. Demonstrate how to record neural signals and infer their behavioral functions;
  4. Demonstrate how to label nerve cells and trace neural pathways. Investigate, interpret, critique, synthesize and evaluate the scientific literature on how neural systems work;
  5. Demonstrate improved scientific writing skills.
