GEOL 397 - Advanced Field Experience


Units: 2
Applied field based inquiry activities to develop advanced field skills, common to field research and professional activity in geology and the environmental sciences. Students spend extended periods in a natural, outdoor laboratory setting.

Prerequisites: GEOL 297, junior or senior standing.
Repeatability: May be repeated for a maximum of 6 units when content varies.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Consistently and accurately self-locate and navigate using topographic maps, a pocket transit compass, and advanced GPS methods. Identify, interpret and characterize intermediate to complex geo-environmental systems, evaluate their origins and/or remediation.
  2. Identify, measure and collect data from environmental systems using sophisticated geologic and environmental tools and methods.
  3. Compile and construct syntheses based on field observations, data, subsequent analysis, and peer/group interaction.
  4. Exhibit competence in a field environment, an understanding of industry safety standards and an introduction to safe back-country field work.
