HSC 365 - Mental Health and Policy

Public health and policy issues in mental health. Impact of economic, political, social and cultural factors in the provision of mental health care services.

Prerequisites: B.S. Health Sciences major and HSC 315.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Understand the historical and contemporary perspectives on mental disorders.
  2. Understand the implications of the current classification and processing of mental disorders
  3. Describe clinical approaches, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment of major mental disorders.
  4. Outline a public health approach to study mental health conditions.
  5. Understand the organizational characteristics, financing and delivery of mental health services.
  6. Recognize the impact of race, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, and other differences in mental health.
  7. Discuss the portrayal of mental health in coverage of violence in the media.
