HDEV 421 - Child Cognitive Development: Theory and Research


Units: 4
Theories, methods, and research findings in child cognitive development from the prenatal stage to age 12. Biological and genetic foundations of cognition, perception, mental representation, problem solving, reasoning, memory, metacognition, and social cognition.

Prerequisites: Junior, senior or post-baccalaureate standing.
Credit Restrictions: Not open to students with credit for HDEV 4510.
Equivalent Quarter Course: HDEV 4110.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate core knowledge in biological, psychological, and socio-cultural aspects of human development (SLO1; ILO6).
  2. Demonstrate critical thinking ability by summarizing, comparing, synthesizing, and critiquing interdisciplinary human development perspectives (SLO2; ILO1).
  3. Demonstrate the ability to access information, design, and conduct individual and/or group research projects, and present them clearly, logically, and persuasively (SLO3; ILO2).
  4. Demonstrate the ability to identify and address problems knowledge in diverse contexts; (SLO4; ILO2,3).
