The goal is to prepare future teachers to implement K-12 Next Generation Science Standards with confidence.
Prerequisites: GEOL 100, and Mathematics/QR Placement Category I or II, or completion of GE area B4. Credit Restrictions: Not for Geology or Environmental Science major credit. Equivalent Quarter Course: GEOL 3011. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely Online. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Design a lesson for middle-school students connecting Earth science with another STEM discipline,
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge in integrated Earth Science including planetary science, geology, meteorology, climatology and oceanography,
- Apply quantitative methods and appropriate scientific and engineering practices (aligned with NGSS),
- Examine Earth Science content through the lens of common scientific misconceptions,
- Demonstrate advanced and/or focused science content knowledge in Earth science using appropriate vocabulary and referencing appropriate concepts (such as models, uncertainties, hypotheses, theories, and technologies),
- Apply advanced quantitative skills (such as statistics, algebraic solutions, interpretation of graphical data) to scientific problems,
- Critically analyze scientific claims and data,
- Apply science content knowledge to contemporary scientific issues (e.g. global warming) and technologies (e.g. renewable energy), where appropriate. (See attached transformed course syllabus)
