SW 630 - The Recovery Model in Community Mental Health Units: 4 Concepts and practices of wellness and recovery for individuals, families, and society. A major emphasis is on applying recovery concepts to culturally diverse, urban, and stigmatized populations and advocating for and with consumers of mental health programs.
Prerequisites: M.S.W. major. Credit Restrictions: Master of Social Work students only. Equivalent Quarter Course: SW 6550. Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid Only. Grading: A-F grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of recovery and wellness in the provision of public mental health services (PLO: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
- Apply concepts of recovery-oriented services to diverse, urban, and stigmatized populations (PLOs: Diversity; Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
- Advocate for and with consumers of public mental health programs to address disparities in care, combat stigma and discrimination, and increase access to quality care (PLO: Advocacy).
- Discuss psychiatric medications and the role of psychopharmology in person-centered recovery (PLO: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
- Identify and describe the effects of mental illness on families and communities, with special attention to characteristics such as what creates healing and wellness (PLO: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
- Demonstrate the family’s role in healing and mental health recovery, including the function of consumer and family advocacy groups (PLOs: Advocacy; Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
- Explore practice approaches with individuals dually diagnosed with mental health and substance abuse issues (PLO: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
- Understand systems issues in the delivery of public mental health services in California as it relates to implementation of recovery-oriented practice (PLO: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
- Explore provider, consumer, family member, and other roles in the provision of recovery-oriented mental health services, with special attention to the ethical issues surrounding this inclusive approach (PLOs: Values and Ethics; Professional Use of Self).
