SW 611 - Generalist Practice I


Units: 4
Competencies for generalist social work practice in micro and mezzo settings. Students will develop skills in intervention strategies including constructing professional relationships, assessing client situations, planning and implementing change, and evaluating outcomes.  (See Errata Course  for instructional methods update)

Prerequisites: M.S.W. major.
Equivalent Quarter Course: SW 6011 and SW 6012.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Demonstrate self-awareness and the competent use of self in professional interaction (PLO: Professional Use of Self).
  2. Articulate values and ethics underlying empowering social work relationships (PLO: Values and Ethics).
  3. Collaborate with clients to write case plans that include positively oriented goals, measurable objectives, and achievable action steps (PLO: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
  4. Implement the strengths perspective with clients and families of diverse backgrounds as influenced by the intersectionality of multiple factors such as age, class, color, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, political ideology, race, religion, sex, and sexual orientation (PLO: Diversity).
  5. Describe how the strengths perspective and the empowerment method for generalist practice promote social justice. (PLO: Advocacy).
  6. Utilize accepted research methods to evaluate practice effectiveness in micro and mezzo practice settings (PLO: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
  7. Assess clients and families using ecosystems theory applications, such as genograms and eco-maps. (PLO: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
  8. Define generalist social work practice as an integration of policy, practice, and research (PLO: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
  9. Guide conversations with clients toward strengths and solutions (PLO: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
  10. Determine effective strategies to activate client system resources through resource management, education, and consulting activities (PLO: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
