ENGL 610 - Medieval Literature


Units: 4
Study of major works, authors, and literary topics of the medieval period; at least one work read in the original language.

Prerequisites: Post-baccalaureate standing.
Equivalent Quarter Course: ENGL 6100.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Demonstrate, in brief essays on the mid-term and final examinations, a familiarity with the major genres, themes, and techniques of medieval literature.
  2. Demonstrate, in written and oral work in the classroom, an acquaintance with key authors and works representative of medieval literature and culture.
  3. Demonstrate (1) an ability to analyze selected passages of medieval literary texts and (2) an ability to use such analyses both to illuminate and complicate a reading of the texts in which these passages occur.
  4. Demonstrate, in a term project essay of 10-12 pages, an ability to identify, find, and use library resources (books, journals, concordances, lexicons, etc.) in medieval literature, resources that may further the student’s work both in and beyond ENGL 610.
  5. Demonstrate, in written and oral work in the classroom, an understanding of relevant critical theory and its appropriate application to the works read in the course.
  6. Demonstrate, in written and oral work in the classroom, an appreciation of the continuities between medieval and modern literature and culture, including attention to the diversity of audiences in both eras.
