ENGL 661 - Theory and Practice of Teaching Literature


Units: 4
Theory and methods for teaching literary genres and periods appropriate for high school and community college literature courses.

Equivalent Quarter Course: ENGL 6770.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Articulate a clear and cogent philosophy of teaching literature.
  2. Evaluate current pedagogical theories for teaching literature and promoting equity and social justice.
  3. Create effective class plans, activities, assignments, and syllabi appropriate for teaching literature to diverse populations of high school, community college, and four-year university students.
  4. Use audio, video, research, and internet materials in the literature classroom.
  5. Assess classroom success, grade student work, and evaluate student learning.
  6. Share and present ideas and insights about literature and learning in a community of reflective teachers.
