ENGL 651 - Theory and Practice of Teaching Oral Skills to Adults


Units: 4
Focuses on current research as well as practical, innovative methods for teaching listening and speaking to adult English learners.

Prerequisites: Post-baccalaureate standing.
Equivalent Quarter Course: ENGL 6501.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Analyze historical trends in language teaching, summarize various methods for teaching oral skills, assess their strengths and weaknesses, and explore the connection between theory and practice.
  2. Write formal lessons plans using a format that includes a statement of learning outcomes as well as descriptions of materials and equipment needed, the sequence and procedures for activities, and methods of assessment.
  3. Develop and execute teaching demonstration individually and collaboratively.
  4. Tutor a language learner.
  5. Summarize learning styles and strategies.
  6. Critically observe ESL classes and write up the classroom observations in a professional manner.
