NURS 451 - Community Health Nursing Practice Units: 2 ; Breadth Area: Social Justice This course applies concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention at the individual, family, community and systems levels. The focus is to promote health equity by addressing social determinants of health through the application of the nursing process. Note: The Social Justice Overlay requirement is satisfied upon completion of the two-course sequence, NURS 450 and NURS 451.
Prerequisites: B.S. Nursing major and all of: NURS 420, NURS 421, NURS 422, NURS 423, NURS 427. Co-requisites: NURS 450. Credit Restrictions: Repeated course may not count toward Major requirements. Equivalent Quarter Course: NURS 4208. Repeatability: May be repeated once for credit for a maximum of 4 units. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: CR/NC grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Utilize the nursing process to provide services to individuals, families and communities.
- Identify the socioeconomic institutional and systems factors that can promote or hinder the health of communities.
- Apply multiple approaches to the assessment of a community.
- Apply principles of epidemiology in community health nursing practice to promote the health of individuals, families and communities.
- Collaborate with intra- and inter-disciplinary team members to provide health services to individuals, families, groups and the community.
- Identify strategies that nurses can use to impact health policy development in community and public health.
Social Justice Overlay Learning Outcomes - use a disciplinary perspective to analyze issues of social justice and equity;
- describe the challenges to achieving social justice; and
- identify ways in which individuals and/or groups can contribute to social justice within local communities, nations, or the world.
