SOC 418 - Sociology of Music

Music’s connection to social/political issues. Sociological theory is used to understand musical culture, learn how music is connected to other social factors (race, class, and gender), and develop a deeper understanding of our personal musical preferences.

Prerequisites: SOC 100.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall ONLY

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Communicate different ideas and perspectives about the meaning of music while keeping an open mind about the perspectives of others (PLO 2)
Understand how differences in social location (race, class, gender) influence both our everyday musical experiences as well as macro level policies that affect our understanding of musical art forms. (PLO 3)
Identify and integrate academic perspectives on various topics related to music (SLO 6).
