HSC 445 - HIV/AIDS in a Global Context


Units: 3
Global overview of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and issues in prevention of HIV/AIDS among vulnerable populations. Emphasis on the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the comprehension of and response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Prerequisites: HSC 315.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Critically assess political and ethical challenges raised by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
  2. Develop a common vocabulary based on a historical and biological understanding of HIV and an understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of HIV/AIDS research and programming
  3. Compare the prevention methods of HIV/AIDS as well as its effects with a multidisciplinary lens in multiple countries.
  4. Understand  the effects of HIV/AIDS on vulnerable populations such as women and children.
