CHEM 111 - General Chemistry I


Units: 5 ; Breadth Area: GE-B1, GE-B3
Fundamental principles of chemistry: periodic trends, composition of compounds and solutions, stoichiometry, gases, heat and enthalpy, atomic and molecular structure, bonding. Laboratory includes study of the chemical and physical behavior of elements and compounds, and qualitative and quantitative analysis. Lecture Units: 3; Lab Units: 2.

Co-requisites: MATH 120, MATH 125 or MATH 130.
Equivalent Quarter Course: CHEM 1101 and CHEM 1102.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Perform, analyze, and interpret chemical measurements;
  2. Explain the periodic properties of elements;
  3. Infer and quantify the composition of compounds and solutions;
  4. Predict the outcome of chemical reactions;
  5. Relate the properties of gases using gas laws;
  6. Model thermochemical transformations at constant volume or pressure;
  7. Apply the quantum mechanical model to explain atomic structure;
  8. Determine molecular bonding using Lewis, molecular orbital, and valence bond theories;
  9. Predict molecular geometries using VSEPR theory;
  10. Relate intermolecular forces to trends in physical properties.
