Music, BA + Music, MA [Blended 4+1]


Total Blended Program Units (BA + MA): 140

Description:
Students in the FAST Music, B.A.   + Music, M.A.   will complete the requirements for both the B.A. and M.A. degrees. FAST students in this program may double-count up to 12 M.A. units towards both their B.A. and M.A. degrees. These 12 units must be completed in residence at East Bay.

Double-Counted Courses:
Double-counted courses are counted towards both the bachelor’s and master’s degree requirements. The following courses may be double-counted, replacing bachelor’s degree requirements:

  • MUS 351-355, and/or MUS 360-369 (4 units) No replacement needed as already is MA requirement
  • Chamber Ensemble (1 unit)
  • MUS 601 Analysis of Musical Styles (2 units)
  • MUS 603 Entrepreneurship in the Arts (3 units)
  • MUS 661-668 - Graduate Applied Study (2 units)

The latter 7 units of double-counted courses replace undergraduate MUS electives.

Admission Requirements:
Admission Requirements Eligibility: Current enrollment in the Bachelor of Arts in Music program at CSU East Bay. Students are eligible after completing 60 units and no more than 90 units, including completion of lower-division core music coursework (15 units), and lower-division general education requirements. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in music courses, demonstrating academic proficiency.

Application Process: Students apply to the blended program by January 15th of their junior year (between semesters 5 and 6). The application includes:

  • Statement of Purpose: A one- to two-page document outlining the student’s objectives for pursuing the blended BA/MA program, discussing academic and musical goals, and explaining how the program aligns with long-term aspirations.
  • Faculty Recommendations: Two letters of recommendation from Music Department faculty who can assess the student’s readiness for graduate-level study based on academic performance and musical abilities.
  • Evidence of Abilities: Performance (Classical/Jazz): An audition or submission of recordings demonstrating proficiency in the chosen instrument or vocal performance. Choral Conducting: A demonstration of conducting skills, such as a video recording of a rehearsal or performance. Composition: Submission of original compositions or portfolios showcasing compositional skill semester.
