African American Studies Minor

Department & Faculty Information   

The African American Studies minor offers the student majoring in another discipline the opportunity to obtain knowledge and understanding of America’s largest racial minority and its relationship to the larger society. Students considering careers in teaching, government service, foreign affairs, business, health-science related fields, and law may find the minor compatible.

Minor Requirements (24 units)


Lower Division (8 units)


Two lower-division courses in African American studies selected from the following:

Upper Division (16 units)


And any Twelve (12) additional upper-division units


And any Twelve (12) additional upper-division units in African American studies, selected in consultation with an Ethnic Studies advisor:

Other Undergraduate Degree Requirements


In addition to major requirements, every student must also complete the University requirements for graduation which are described in the Undergraduate Admission and Degree Information & FAQ  chapter in the front of this catalog. These include the General Education-Breadth requirements; the second composition (ENGL 1002 ) requirement; the cultural groups/women requirement; the performing arts/activities requirement; the U.S. history, U.S. Constitution, and California state and local government requirement; the University Writing Skills Requirement; and the residence, unit, and grade point average requirements.
